Be true to your teeth.
Fed up to the back teeth with the way you look? Here Dr Charles Ferber explains what can be achieved with modern cosmetic dentistry techniques. This month: dental implants.
Today, patients’ expectations are much higher because of advances in technology and medicine. People want treatment methods that not only eliminate disease, but also replace defective parts and make them feel whole again.
That also applies increasingly in dentistry. Removable solutions such as dentures used to be generally accepted, but more and more patients insist on more instantly gratifying, permanent options such as ‘Immediate Loading Dental Impants’ that look and feel more authentic.
But what does it involve? Obviously a lot more time spent in the dentist’s chair, and a higher cost – but the results can be transformational. It typically takes 3-6 months for the bone and implant to fuse together and form anchors (osseointegration). During this time, patients can wear a removable, temporary tooth replacement over the implant site.
Research and years of successful experience in joint replacement procedures (eg. The hip) have shown Titanium to be ideal in it’s biological compatibility with the human body (“Bone-friendly Titanium”). The Titanium implants bonds (fuses) with the jawbone to create a foundation that is often stronger than the original root, hence in many situations, immediate loading is possible.
Each patient has to be carefully assessed to ensure that they are suitable for this type of treatment. Normal protocols and diagnostic procedures are carried out and treatment options (including costs) are discussed at length with the patient. The type of dental implant selected will be dependant on the patient’s specific needs and general dental and medical condition. Panoramic x-rays and/or CT Scans is usually required to evaluate the amount of bone, and determine the space available.
‘3-D CT Scans’ and pre-operative planning software are now available that provide accurate and comprehensive information about the patient’s anatomy before any work takes place – providing an increased level of confidence and extra margin of safety for patients. It also enables ‘flapless surgery’ – whereby no incisions are made in the patient’s mouth.
Today, a person can walk in with few teeth, failing teeth, or even no teeth at all, and they can walk out with a new set of replacement teeth the same day.
Unlike dentures, Immediate Loading Implants do not sip, slide or click – so no more worries about your dentures popping out in embarrassing situations. You can now chew correctly, eat with pleasure and smile with confidence.
And a quote to end with: “Be true to your teeth and they won’t be false to you”.

Smile please! What cosmetic dentistry could do for you.

Everyone smiles in the same language, and it’s one of the most important forms of communication. Instantly, it projects your self confidence, personality, self image, and how you feel about the people you’re with - both personally and professionally; and it reflects in how they see and treat you.

The dentist everyone calls Charlie.
There are over 1000 dentists in Central London, but celebrity dentist, Dr Charles Ferber, prides himself on his, friendly approach. “Every dentist likes to think he or she is the best, but it is the patients that recommend you and let you know, and I am in the position here of treating patients for over 20 years in a successful and happy practice, and that speaks for itself”.
At his Wimpole Street practice, Charles has a highly dedicated and caring team. Dr Wilf Chan is the Endodontist, who performs the highly skilled root canal treatments. Linda May has been the Hygienist for over 15 years. Julie is the receptionist and practice manageress. Anna and Jeannie are the nurses that help care for the patients.
All of the staff have been with him for many years. “This kind of loyalty creates a very happy atmosphere” which has a calming effort on nervous patients, many of whom are famous showbiz personalities, top sportsmen, politicians, models and many from the media.
The practice has a special interest in cosmetic dentistry, porcelain veneers, crowns and bridgework, dental implants and especially preventive dentistry.
“It’s something I feel strongly about, adapting a holistic attitude towards health. One has to look at the patient as a whole, listen and respect the individual problem that the patient presents”.
“I get presented with many complex problems that require a team approach”.
For example (Fig.1) Female patient aged 40 complained of a front tooth sticking out too much and she didn’t like the gap between her front teeth. A specialist Orthodontist firstly placed a brace for about 3 months to bring the tooth into line (Fig.2). I then closed the gap using composite bondings (Fig 3.).
Very often porcelain veneers (laminates) are used to improve the cosmetics of the front teeth.
Nowadays many patients do not like to wear dentures (false teeth) and using modern techniques of dental implants, we can get the patients to throw these dentures away and provide them with solid teeth they can chew with, look good and feel more condident!
